Experiencing Marine Reserves
The Experiencing Marine Reserves (EMR) programme has been operational in Northland since 2002 and has been available to other parts of NZ since 2004. MERC is now an ambassador for EMR with the focus on providing EMR to schools in the Auckland region.
The EMR programme empowers schools by providing hands-on marine experience. The programme involves investigating marine biodiversity in both non-protected and protected marine environments, students are then encouraged to put their knowledge into action within the community.
The programme is run over three days. Day one is spent firstly in the classroom learning about the ocean foreshore and the marine life found there. This is followed by an afternoon at the pool learning how to snorkel. Day two is spent at a non protected beach snorkeling the reefs and discovering aspects of a non protected marine environment. Day three is a day snorkelling in a protected environment ( goat island). This allows the children to see the spectacular difference between a protected and non protected environment. Armed with their own underwater photos and knowledge from their three days they are then in a position to undertake their own school projects.
Comprehensive educational manuals for this programme are available from MERC.
"Experiencing Marine Reserves (EMR) is a national marine education model. As director of the national programme, I am very excited about the prospect of Sir Peter Blake Marine Education & Recreation Centre offering this programme to schools in the Auckland region. Marine reserves are a vital marine education tool for students to see marine life in its natural habitat to develop awareness and appreciation of the sea".
